AMWA Freelance POTLUCK Event: Updating Your Portfolio
Whether applying for short-term projects, a contract assignment, or a full time position, a portfolio of samples is the most important tool in a writer’s job hunting kit. But just putting samples in a binder is only the beginning. As communicators you know that presentation is everything. This workshop will help you enhance the effectiveness of your work samples and your overall interviewing skills by creating a book that’s a visual aid for your resume. It will not only give you specific guidelines on what to show but when and how to show it, for professional presentations that turn interviews into job offers. It will also address how to develop an electronic portfolio for submission following a telephone interview, and the advantages offered by a personal Web site in presenting your work and attracting new clients.
Wendy Lalli has been coaching professional writers, editors, and researchers in transition for over ten years. A marketing and public relations writer herself, she developed winning formats for both print and electronic portfolios for her own work and created this seminar when she became a recruiter for Paladin Staffing. Since then she has been a career advice columnist and written frequent articles for the Chicago Tribune, the Daily Southtown, Star newspapers, CMA Today, the Marketeer, and various career Web sites including BioSpace.com and www.whatcollegeforgot.com. She also has designed and facilitated career seminars for colleges, associations, and libraries throughout Illinois including, the School of the Art Institute, the National Writers Union, and the Business Marketing Association.
